The event, held annually in September, aims to raise money for local charities, hence there is a £20 entry fee for each team and teams are encouraged to raise sponsorship money themselves. The race date is set in February / March each year.

THE ROUTE AND THE RULES
The route runs from a starting line at the old Rifle Range (grid reference SJ634093) in Wrekin Course (the lane that runs along-side the Rifle Range). It follows the little-used footpath which climbs to a point just above the 'Half-way House' and on to a finishing line at grid reference SJ631083 near to 'Heaven Gate' - some distance from the summit. This is a vertical distance of approximately 1,000 feet(300 metres) and path distance approximately 1.5 miles (2.4Km). Each team will have a team number and will start at an allotted time at an exact minute. This start time will be known by the finishing line marshal who will record the time when the last member of the team, as well as the beer barrel, crosses the finishing line. This way the elapsed time for the climb will be calculated. All team members and the barrel allocated to them must travel the full course.
The barrel will be weighed immediately upon finishing to ensure the weight is unchanged from the start.
No aids to lift or carry the barrel will be allowed other than gloves worn by the team members. These gloves, which are not provided by the organisers, are intended only to protect the hands and must not be configured so as to obtain an unfair advantage over other competitors. The barrel may be lifted and carried by any number of team members in any order for any time.
The Wrekin Barrel Race is a physically demanding race and all competitors must take responsibility for their own health and declared level of fitness.
The organisers cannot be held responsible for any injuries incurred by the competitors.
(On the day of the race, participants will be asked to sign a declaration to this effect.)
